Prospective Lab Members
What you should know about us: Our goal is to produce the best science possible in the service of biodiversity conservation. Doing that requires a diversity of opinions, approaches, areas of expertise, and past experiences. It also requires teamwork. Thus, above all else, our lab values inclusivity--we all have something unique to bring to the table and, together, we can produce truly valuable results. As a result, lab members come from a wide variety of backgrounds and bring a wide variety of experiences; lab members are also planning to go on to do a wide variety of things with their careers. There is no 'one' set of experiences that will prepare you for a career in science, nor is there any 'one' scientific career.
Our work takes us where the birds and mammals we study spend their time. That might be rural Alaska, the agricultural fields of South Dakota, the barrier islands of South Carolina, the beaches of northwest Mexico, the bays of southern Chile, the lagoons of Brazil, or the tops of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Wherever we go, though, we also strive to become involved with and partners of local communities so that we can learn from the people who know their environments best. Only in that way can we work toward a truly sustainable future for our biodiversity.
Finally, conservation science is only one of our passions. We all have lives that are so much richer! You will see me out running most every day; other lab members watch birds, write, bake, take photographs, dance salsa, make prints, climb, and hike; we all enjoy good food and spending time together.
What we would like to know about you: What drives your interest in science and how does that align with the work we do? Conservation science is a very broad field. So, whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student, or a post-doctoral scholar, this is the most important question you can ask yourself before getting in touch. You don't need to have a project already in mind, but you should have an area of interest that you can talk about and see yourself diving into more deeply.
Beyond that, I am always happy to talk and figure out ways that someone might become involved in our lab--please just write. I am open to helping write fellowship applications or, even, helping figure out what other avenues there might be to pursue your desired career. If I have any specific openings available, I will post them here.
